NHS England has today published its Five Year Forward View (5YFV).
The document sets out a proposed direction of travel for the health service from the perspective of the major healthcare bodies, led by NHS England. It can be downloaded from http://www.england.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/5yfv-web.pdf.
The Forward View has been widely anticipated since Simon Stevens took up his role as the Chief Executive of NHS England in April 2014. It represents his first major strategic plan for the future development of healthcare and marks a new way of working for the NHS.
Apart from a reference to Clinical Commissioning Groups (CRGs) having greater influence over budgets the 5YFV does not mention changes to the system of specialised commissioning. However there is a reference to the commitments in the UK Strategy for Rare Diseases to consider specialist centres for rare diseases.
