South West Kayak Challenge

South West Kayak Charity Challenge 10th – 24th August

As reported in our most recent Newsletter, 4 kayakers are planning to sea kayak from Bude in Cornwall to Exeter in Devon, following the Northern coastline of Cornwall, around Lands End, along the South Coast of Cornwall and Devon ending in Exeter.

Chris Brown-Martin, who is an Alpha, and some of his friends, did a kayak and cycle event in 2011 to raise money for Alpha 1 Awareness UK and Devon Air Ambulance, but he wanted to do more of a challenge……

The Challenge … in brief… 4 kayaks, 4 paddlers, 300miles of coastline (approx), 1 land support crew, 2 weeks…

The Kayakers with their on road support team, are setting off from Bude on the morning of Saturday 10th August between 9.30am and 10.30am, our membership secretary Meryl Darkins and her husband Jeff, who is our treasurer, will be at Bude to see the team off on their way and Lin Daniels plans to be in Exeter on Saturday 24thAugust to see the team arrive back, safely. In Exeter there is to be a mass paddle up the canal into the city, where we feel sure there will plenty of people to give a rousing welcome home to the intrepid Kayakers.

Please, if you are in the Devon or Cornwall area, between the 10th and 24th August, keep a look out around the coastal area, you never know you may well see these brilliant guys and their back up team, if you see anything reported in the local Newspapers down there or on local TV or Radio, please can to you let us know, you can email  secretary@alpha1awareness.org.uk or contact us at Alpha 1 Awareness, PO Box 2866, Eastville, BRISTOL BS5 5EE.   If you can be in Bude for the start of the Challenge on the 10th August or in Exeter on 24th August when they reach the end of their journey, please go along and give them a big, big, cheer, and don’t forget to seek out our stand and introduce yourself.

This is a terrific physical  challenge for these young men and is not without danger, so please if you can support them by being at the start or finish or by being at one of their overnight stops, in places along the coast, like Newquay, St Ives, Lands End, Penzance, Falmouth, Looe, Torquay, there will probably be others I have missed, but I feel sure there will be publicity in the area and there will be the road back up team, with stickers all over their vehicle for the 4 Charities

Thank you to all the team, we wish them all the luck in the world, fair weather and sunshine, but not too hot, stay safe.
